Lavarone is at 1,185 m of altitude and has about 1,100 inhabitants. The municipality takes its name from the extensive plateau covered by forests and meadows on which it is located. There is no village, instead, called Lavarone: the municipality joins together many hamlets, including Albertini, Azzolini, Bertoldi, Chiesa, Cappella, Gasperi, Gionghi, Lanzino, Lenzi, Longhi, Masetti, Magrè, Masi di Sotto, Nicolussi, Oseli, Piccoli, Rocchetti, Stengheli and Slaghenaufi. For those who stay in Lavarone, the Forte Belvedere Gschwent is home to the Museum of the First World War in the Alps and is worth visiting. The Austro-Hungarian fort, built to supervise the border over the Val d'Astico, is one of the most important testimonies of the Great War line. In the winter, snow turns Lavarone into a paradise for skiers. In the hamlets of Bertoldi and Malga Laghetto there are the slopes (18 km) and the ski lifts part of the "Carosello dei Forti" and Skirama Dolomiti. Lavarone is a renowned cross country skiing resort with the international Millegrobbe competition, that takes place every year. Summer in Lavarone is ideal for sports and relaxation.
