Forio and surroundings

Forio is the second municipality, by population and importance. It stretches at the center of two promontories, Punta Caruso (in Zaro) and Punta Imperatore, among the most beautiful beaches of the island and in the green metallic vines, which descend from Mount Epomeo in a setting of incomparable beauty. Forio has an area of ​​13 square kilometers with a population of about 12500 inhabitants and its altitude ranges from 0 meters above sea level to 700 in the areas of Falanga. It is divided into the fortified villages of Forio and Panza with other peripheral villages (Monterone, Cuotto, Citara). It is the only municipality that retains its historic center with alleys, churches, sight towers and unmarked monuments in their structure . The most important monuments are the Church of the Assumption (listed on the postage stamp of the Italian Post) dedicated to Santa Maria della Neve, the Torrione, the church of San Francesco da Paola, the church of the Archconfraternity of Santa Maria delle Grazie called Visitapoveri, of Loreto, Church of S. Vito, parish church of S. Leonardo Abate, S. Maria al Monte. If Ischia is the commercial center of the island, Forio can be defined as the cultural one. In the 1950s he was an international center for famous performers (Luchino Visconti, Pierpaolo Pasolini, Sir William Walton, Eduardo De Filippo, Liz Taylor and Richard Burton), culture (Elsa Morante, Alberto Moravia, Renato Guttuso, Auden, Pablo Neruda ), politics (Pietro Nenni) and jet-set (Jackelin Kennedy, Aristotle Onassis) and many more. The Forio coast, with its continuous recesses and bosses, allows bathing not just on long beaches but also in places secluded. With little effort you can reach Zaro or, in the locality of Panza, the truly unique Baia di Sorgeto which, due to the presence of hot pools, is, in any season, a suggestive destination for a "night bath".
