Rocca San Giovanni and surroundings
A small hamlet in the province of Chieti, Rocca San Giovanni rises on a rocky hill, overlooking the sea between the streams of the Sangro river and the Feltrino stream, on a low hilly area at 155 meters. A diploma by Henry III addressed to the Monastery of St. John in Venus cites the village for the first time in 1047. However, the first inhabited nucleus rises in 1076. In the Middle Ages there were families of the Longobard-French nobility, interested in monastic colonization Benedictine from the 8th century. From the 11th century it became a fortress for use as a fortress - refuge of the nearby monastery of St. John in Venus. It remained under the control of the abbey until the sixteenth century, then passed under the jurisdiction of the congregation of Filippo Neri in Rome and in the late eighteenth century it returned to the Regio Demanio. There are some remains of walls, a canopy. The demolitions of the early 1900s have changed the original layout, disturbing the harmony between village and landscape. But the smell of the Adriatic still comes to caress the wall and parish church of the thirteenth century and the green of the olive groves, vineyards and orange trees leads to the fantastic coast of the Trabocchi, a place where the sea fizzles on the rocks, delimiting creeks and small white pebbly beaches. The largest beach in the resort is the "Foce". The pebble, mostly gravelly, over six hundred meters long lies between the ancient village of Vallevò and Punta Torre, where the name of the same name is Trabocco. Another suggestive beach, one of the most beautiful on the Trabocchi Coast, is that of the "Cavalluccio". The thirty-foot-long, four-foot-long beach, mostly sandy, is characterized by an overflow still in use and a large stack called scoglione
