Sorano and surroundings

The village of Sorano is part of Pitigliano and Castell'Azzara of the so-called "Tufo City", the main settlements of a characteristic volcanic formation area, located in the north of Lake Bolsena, in the heart of Maremma. Tuff is an essential element to understand the historical and geographical development of the area: the beauty of the landscapes lies in the deep gorges that open between gentle hills, shaped by the course of the centuries by nature and man. In the tuff have found shelter the first populations that settled in the area: the hypogee dwellings of primitive peoples, necropolis and communication channels, "the caves", the Etruscans, the Roman colombars, to the medieval and Renaissance dwellings and monuments still perfectly preserved, among which is the Orsini Fortress, which dominates the valley. Today, tufacee "caves" serve to preserve the wine, one of the typical resources of the area. Sorano stands on a tufacea spur which overlooks the bed of the Lente River. The beauty of the village tastes best for those who come from Sovana and Castell'Azzara: to the eye of the passer-by appears an agglomeration of tufaceous stone buildings that blend with the boulder, as if they were sprinkled.
Sorano: Etruscan origins and testimonies
The first historical testimonies concerning the core of Sorano date back to the III sec. BC, when the Roman conquest of Etruria begins. The area is rich in finds, necropolis, temples and tunnels, as well as the ancient "quarries", the sacred underground streets of the Etruscans.

The Necropolis of San Rocco can be reached from the road that connects Sorano to Sovana and is located along the river Lente. It is made up of numerous chamber tombs, colombars and rock dwellings dating back to the III - II century BC Colombari are one of the most important tourist attractions of the area: there are niches dug into the tuff, many of which are located along the tufa wall rising from the Lente River, while others around the town's cliffs (Colombarie, Rocchette, Castelvecchio, San Rocco). The only hypothesis that concerns them is that they were used by both the Etruscans and the Romans, but for different uses: the Etruscans already found these rock niches, probably used by primitive inhabitants of the area as defensive shelters, re-adapting them for funerary purposes. the Romans used them as shelter for thousands of pigeon travelers, profitable activities of the period.
Sorano: sec. XII - XIX
In 862, Emperor Ludovico II signed the foundation of Aldobrandesca County, which attributes importance to Sorano's "municipium". Sorano's fates are bound for about five centuries to those of this noble family, not always happy because of cruel fights of supremacy and defense.

The first documents concerning Sorano are dated 1172, signed by the accounts of Bartolomeo, local lords linked to the Aldobrandeschi family. A document of 1210, signed by Brass IV, attests to Sorano's possession of Ildebrandino of the Aldobrandeschi. In 1216 it was assigned to the Aldobrandeschi of Sovana.
In 1293 Sorano passed under the Orsini Family, an ancient and noble Roman family, thanks to the marriage between Romano di Gentile Orsini and Anastasia, daughter of the last descendant of the Aldobrandeschi, Margherita. The dowry included Sorano's fief, which shared with Pitigliano the vicissitudes: the war of 1416-1417, which ended with the signing of a treaty in which the fiefs of Sorano, Pitigliano and Castell'Ottieri bend to the indirty sovereignty of Sienese state and in 1454 the siege, always by the Sienese militia. Orsini's fortune was linked to the election of Pope John de Gaetano Orsini, Pope under the name of Niccolò III. Sorano became the defensive bastard against Siena. In 1555 the Republic of Siena fell and, the following year, Niccolò Orsini fully reaffirmed its legitimacy in the County. It is at this time the consolidation of the Rocca di Sorano and its noble fortress, a splendid example of military architecture.
It remained the property of the Orsini family until 1604, when it became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The doctors' jurisdiction lasted "without infamy and without praise" until 1737, when Sorano passed to Lorraine, who found malaria in the area, but fortunately Sorano was not hit: under the regency of Lorraine the country experienced a long period of prosperity economic and social.
From the reports that came to Grand Duke Leopoldo, there is some agricultural and social prosperity compared to other Maremma's realities. In 1765 the provinces of Siena and Grosseto were created, the latter comprising the territory of Sorano, which became common with Pitigliano.
In 1790 Ferdinand III succeeded his father, but soon he had to leave the territory under the threat of French troops. The Grand Duke returned after the Restoration and, ten years later, died leaving power to his son Leopold II, who pledged vigorously to revitalize the Maremma. The results delayed so much that no Soranese participated in the successive Wars of Independence for the unity of Italy, although in the plebiscite of March 20, 1869, the Sorenians voted compact for union.
