Montepulciano and surroundings

On the ridge that divides the Val D'Orcia from the Valdichiana, rises - on a limestone hill - Montepulciano. This beautiful Renaissance village, with a medieval layout, is immersed in a postcard landscape, which in any direction goes beyond the most classic and widespread idea of the Tuscan countryside, the one where waves of hills and golden fields dotted with cypresses chase each other. The best way to discover the elegant historic center is to walk it through Porta al Prato, in the lower part of the city, in order to follow the course, which leads to the top of the hill, with Piazza Grande. It will be a succession of imposing buildings Renaissance, craft shops, churches with splendid facades and with even more beautiful and interesting interiors. Then, as mentioned, here is Piazza Grande, which is also the epicenter of many cultural events of international importance. Piazza Grande is dominated by the beautiful tower and the Gothic facade of the Town Hall. Opposite the town hall is the Duomo, dating from the late 16th century. But despite the indisputable beauty, Montepulciano is internationally known also for its Vino Nobile, one of the most appreciated Tuscan wines in the world, obtained by pressing the grapes from the vineyards surrounding the village. Do not miss a visit to one of the monumental cellars. Many of these have architectural features that can arouse the interest not only of wine lovers, but also of those who are simply passionate about beauty, the fascinating, places that can arouse emotions. Going back to the historic center, just below the city walls it is possible to admire the beautiful temple of the Madonna di San Biagio (of which the 500th anniversary of its foundation was celebrated in 2018), a Renaissance work by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder.
