 Lecce
Lying on a plain at the foot of the Salento plateau is Lecce - called the "Florence of the South" - one of the most interesting cities of the region for its architectural features, typically seventeenth-century. Of very ancient origins, the city experienced two particularly flourishing moments: that of the Roman era and that of the Kingdom of Naples. Precisely in this period there was a great development in the construction of buildings, monuments and stately buildings characterized by a sumptuous and rich ornamental and architectural scene that deserved the definition of "baroque Lecce". The imaginative and meticulous work of sculpture was facilitated by the use of local stone, ductile and easy to inlay. The visit of Lecce can start from Piazza Duomo, once used as a fortified citadel and now considered the most elegant "living room" in the city. The grandeur of the Duomo, the work of Zimbalo, Cino and Penna, the five-storey high bell tower, the Palazzo Vescovile and the Palazzo del Seminario mark the perimeter of the square, one of the monumental works that best represents the magnificence of the Lecce style. Not far from Piazza Sant'Oronzo, in its perimeter, contains the history of the city. The Roman era is testified by the remains of the Amphitheater which in summer becomes the exceptional stage for theatrical performances and, in part, by the High Column - on which stands the stature bronze of the saint depicted during the act of blessing - erected in the seventeenth century using part of the Roman columns located on the ancient Appian Way. Symbol of the Renaissance period is the Palazzo del Seggio, known as the "Sedile", now home to important art exhibitions, and the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, guardian of interesting frescoes and wooden works. Behind the square we find the Castle of Charles V, a typical defensive construction that contrasts with the rigor of the external lines, inside, the refined and refined style of the aristocratic architectures. Imposing and majestic the Porta Rudiae is crowned, instead, by the statues of Sant'Oronzo, of Sant'Irene and San Domenico, with two pairs of columns positioned on the sides of the central arch, beyond which is the Church of the Rosary which strikes the look for the artistic fantasy of its grandiose façade. To visit, then, is the Basilica of Santa Croce, where the inspiration of the "stonecutters" masters has left its mark in the monumental façade that anticipates the beauty of the interiors, a harmonious balance between the sobriety of the classic and the sumptuousness of the Lecce baroque.

Ostuni
Ostuni, a characteristic village in the province of Brindisi that rises more than 200 meters above sea level on the last slopes of the Murgia, is one of the most famous places of Salento along with Santa Maria di Leuca, Otranto and Taranto.
Ostuni is also known as the White City because of the characteristic color of its houses. This small town in the heart of Salento is a renowned seaside resort that for years has been awarded the Blue Flag and the Five Sails of Legambiente for cleaning the sea and the quality of services offered to tourists. Moreover, in 2005 the Puglia Region recognized the country as a "tourist resort". The historic center of Ostuni, defined by its inhabitants "La Terra", was once completely painted with white lime, which today is only partially preserved. The houses climb up the steep slopes of a hill and the village is characterized by a tangle of winding streets, a succession of little squares, alleys and courtyards. On the top of the hill rise the Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace.Long the 17 kilometers of coastline of the territory of Ostuni, in a wonderful play of colors, wind long beaches with dunes covered by Mediterranean scrub and an alternation of sandy coves and rocky coast . The coastline today is one of the most important seaside tourist attractions of Puglia.
Do not miss Rosa Marina, a succession of small sandy beaches, among the Mediterranean scrub. On the high dunes that give the name to the town of Monticelli you can find a quiet and familiar atmosphere. Costa Merlata is so named for the extremely indented coastline, with the sea winding between the ravines of a rocky coastline forming singular and intimate sandy coves.

Alberobello
A little more than fifty kilometers from Bari and about fifteen from the sea, the town of Alberobello ("Iarubèdd" in the local dialect) is certainly one of the most characteristic of all Puglia. The name of the town, in fact, immediately brings to mind the image of the trulli, the characteristic circular constructions built in dry and surmounted by a dome shaped like a cone closed by a pinnacle, which find their most important place here. The town is the heart of the Valle dei Trulli, a district comprising, as well as from Alberobello, the towns of Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Ostuni, Fasano, Cisternino and Ceglie Messapica between the provinces of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto. The trulli of Alberobello, more than a thousand, are a national monument since 1930 and since 1996 have become part of the UNESCO world heritage. A consecration for these buildings that, grouped in the historic center of Alberobello, appear at first glance like large heaps of stones, in a vision that is both fantastic and suggestive. The birth of the trulli (the name of Greek origin means precisely circular structure) is all in all recent. The first buildings appear towards the second half of the sixteenth century, to respond to an ingenious practical need of farmers in the area: to build dry homes that could be demolished and rebuilt in a short time. In this way it was avoided to pay the burdensome tax that weighed on the stable houses.

Caves of Castellana
Consider the most important speleological complex of Italy and Europe, the Caves of Castellana are particularly appreciated for the wealth of crystalline concretions, the remarkable extension and the spectacular vastness of the natural tunnels. Located about 40 kilometers from Bari, they represent the result the erosive action of an ancient underground river that has carved and shaped the limestone rock for centuries, the soul of the Murgia Murgia. It was in 1938 that the speleologist Franco Anelli discovered the precious site, about 3 kilometers of underground ways, divided into two paths that reveal marvelous sceneries. Among colossal stalagmites and stalactites and wide caverns adorned with games of shapes and colors, it is possible to admire the Grotto Bianca, the Cave of the Altar, the Cave of the Dome and the passage of the Crib, where lies a stalagmite of Marian features called Madonnina delle Grotte.

Castel del Monte
Castel del Monte, 60 km from Bari, is one of the 53 Italian sites that UNESCO has included in the World Heritage List in 1996. Made by Frederick II of Swabia in the thirteenth century, the Castle dominates, with its massive octagonal structure , the small stretch of the western Murge located 18 km from Andria. Castel del Monte Considered universally a brilliant example of medieval architecture, Castel del Monte actually combines different stylistic elements, from the Romanesque cut of the lions of the entrance to the gothic frame of the towers, from the classical art of the friezes inside the defensive structure of the architecture up to the delicate Islamic refinements of its mosaics. Built around 1240, Castel del Monte became the permanent seat of the court of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, who became only a sovereign of the Kingdom of Sicily. The monarch, nicknamed "Stupor Mundi" for his eclecticism and the vastness of his culture, left all the mystery surrounding his figure to his Castle. The mathematical and astronomical rigor of its plan, based on the eight as a guide number and its positioning, designed to create particular symmetries of light in the days of solstice and equinox, create a symbolism that has fascinated scholars for centuries, leaving visitors a feeling of pleasant enigma. In addition to this the military plant Castel de Monte curiously lacks the elements that characterize most of the military monuments of the period such as the city walls, the moat and the stables.Oct are the sides of the castle plan, eight rooms of the ground and first floor with a trapezoidal plan arranged to form an octagon, and eight are the imposing towers, obviously octagonal, arranged on each of the eight corners. It is believed that in the inner courtyard there was also an octagonal basin. The solid compactness of the limestone mixed with quartz of the facades is scratched on each side by single-light windows on the first floor, mullioned windows on the second and in a three-lighted case. The main entrance, in coral breccia, reproduces the shape of a classic triumphal arch that frames a pointed arch, defined as "a sort of prelude to the Renaissance". The interior, with its high cross-vaulted or barrel vaults, now appears bare from all those decorations that in the past made its majestic spaces, witnessed by the remains of marble and mosaics largely disappeared after centuries of neglect and vandalism. The two internal floors are connected in the towers by spiral staircases arranged counterclockwise, unlike the other defensive constructions of the time. Of particular interest is the hydraulic installation for the toilets, of oriental origin. A masterpiece of inestimable value of the history of Italy, Castel del Monte fully deserves the title of "heritage of humanity": a place to live in its thousand mysteries and to visit at least once in life.

Trani
At 43 km from Bari, the provincial capital with Andria and Barletta, Trani overlooks the Adriatic with the elegance of a clear stone amphitheater and the wonderful jewel of the city port, restored to perfection. The discovery of Trani it starts from the enchanting Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino, a Romanesque treasure suspended over the sea, unusually high compared to the other religious buildings of the region, with a rich decorated interior, with the two crypts of San Nicola and Santa Maria and the San Leucio hypogeum. A few steps from the Cathedral, stands the Castello Svevo, an imposing fort designed by Federico II, while behind the port lie the alleys of the Jewish quarter of Giudecca, between ancient synagogues and craft shops. Not far away, there is the Villa Comunale, a relaxing public garden on the sea, while it is about a mile from the town, the Monastery of Santa Maria Colonna. Enclosed between the Santa Lucia pier and the Sant'Antonio pier, the heart of nightlife and the center of the country is the elegant port on the Adriatic, where you can buy fresh fish or enjoy a glass of excellent Moscato by the sea.

Matera
Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world whose territory holds evidence of human settlements starting from the Paleolithic and without interruption until today. It represents an extraordinary page written by man through the millennia of this long history.Matera is the city of the Sassi, the original urban nucleus, developed from the natural caves carved into the rock and subsequently modeled in increasingly complex structures within two large natural amphitheaters that are the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano. In 1993 the UNESCO declares the Sassi of Matera a World Heritage Site. The Sassi of Matera are the 6th site in Italy in chronological order, the first in the south. the occasion of this inscription, for the first time UNESCO uses in its criteria and motivations the concept of Cultural Landscape, which will later be used to motivate the registration of other sites in the world. On 17 October 2014 Matera was designated European Capital of Culture for 2019. Matera is at the center of an incredible rock landscape that preserves a great heritage of culture and traditions, and it is home to exhibitions of great national and international prestige.
