Syracuse and its surroundings

One of the most beautiful and largest cities in Sicily is Syracuse; with the islet of Ortigia stretches between the mainland and the sea and its coasts close to form two protected landings: the loop of the Porto Piccolo and the Porto Grande at the foot of the Iblei mountains. Its Sicilian name was Syraka, which means "abundance of water", precisely because it is rich in streams and marshy areas. Under the Greek domination it was also called "Pentapoli", since, formed by five large districts, it was the largest city in the Mediterranean, one of the major centers of Greek civilization and a civil and military power. Its size was comparable to that of Athens, Rome and Carthage. Many of its classical monuments are still visible, often incorporated into the structures of the modern city. To his memory are linked names such as those of Archimedes and Theocritus. It was founded in 734 BC by Corinthian colonists, for a long time in the hands of tyrants, Gelon before he made it large and powerful and then Hieron, who caused the city to reach the greatest splendor surrounding a court that welcomed the greatest poets and scholars of the time. Later, during the wars for domination over the Mediterranean, he won over Athens and succeeded in driving out the Carthaginians who had besieged and conquered other great cities of Sicily. Under Hieron II, Syracuse enjoyed a long period of peace, before the arrival of the Romans who conquered it in 212 BC despite the strenuous resistance and the ingenious war machines created by Archimedes. From that moment the decadence of the city began that was then occupied by the Arabs, whose traces have remained still in the form of the streets and the alleys of Ortigia; then it was subdued by the Byzantines; later the Swabians of Frederick II, who built the Maniace castle, alternated; then it was the Normans and finally the Aragonese, who dominated Siracusa.Today the oldest part of the city is on the island of Ortigia which houses the temples of Greek age: that of Apollo and that of Athena, incorporated in the cathedral.
